XTREAM meets again: science, ideas, and the people behind them

One year after the official launch of XTREAM in Bergen, the consortium gathered once again for its first project meeting, hosted by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. For many partners, it was a chance to reconnect in person; for , it was the first time putting faces to names that had so far only existed on screens.

Over two days, researchers, students, and project members came together with a shared goal: to evaluate how far XTREAM has come, and to shape where it is going next.

The meeting opened with NORCE welcoming us, setting the scene for an intensive programme. One of the highlights was an inspirational talk delivered by José Berenguer, a member of our external advisory board, who shared insights into using Thermus as a model for search and production of extremozymes. This was followed by various presentations in which some of our partners shared interesting insights in the field. Olga Genilloud, another member of our external advisory board, also gave us a talk about chemical diversity.

But beyond the slides and discussions, the meeting was also about strengthening the connections that make collaboration possible. Conversations continued over coffee breaks, during shared lunches, and over dinner, in which we could enjoy delicious Spanish food! We also had the opportunity to interview some of our researchers, so stay tuned to see what they said!

As the meeting came to an end, one thing was clear: XTREAM is not only advancing in its scientific mission but also building a strong and committed team ready to explore the potential of extreme aquatic microbiomes.

With new ideas, renewed energy, and plenty of work ahead, the consortium now returns to their labs and institutions until the next time XTREAM meets again. At least we all have our now-traditional XTREAM group photo — guess which unexpected partner we have now!
